Can "Playing Hard to get" backfire?

I been seeing this guy for about four weeks now. When we first met we would talk for hours on the phone and that was before we even went out on our first date During the first and second date I laughed at most of his jokes, I found myself playing with my hair and I even touched him a couple of times when we were talking over dinner. At the end of the night on the first date he walked me to my door and then he did not try to kiss me so I gave him a big kiss on the cheek. He then called me and asked for a second date. I was kind of busy so I rejected his second date offer (now that I think about it I don't think I gave him an alternative day for a second date.) We still remained talking on the phone and then he again asked for a second date and I accepted. The second date went well but I still did not kiss him good night, but I did send him a text right after he went home saying that I had a great time. Anyways, after that we planned a third date, but I got sick and did not feel well enough to go out with him. I'm not sure if he think that I blew him off but I could see him getting that impression since I canceled the date two hours prior to him picking me up. So its been about one week after the 3rd date cancellation and he has been playing really aloof. He has not been calling me as much or text me as much. Whereas before we would text each other like 5 or 7 times a day, now I'm lucky if he text me once the whole day. He no longer calls me in the night as he used to. So yes I must admit that I played hard to get at first ... but just a little bit. So now I'm really worried because he seems like he has lost interest. Could it be that he is the one now playing hard to get or has he moved on? Do you think that he got tired of the chase?
